Should the University of Washington kick Nike to the curb
Just an example of how upside down the world has turned as a result of the economic meltdown and the values of over the top greed, Nike Air Max Uitverkoop which led to the meltdown comes this story from the UK Telegraph. Let put this story and the two other stories in context. The Seattle Times has just begun its fund drive for the neediest and food banks all over the region are scrambling to find enough resources to feed an ever expanding roster of needy families. Unemployment is high and is no hint that more jobs are on the horizon. So, the next two stories about tone deaf pigs at the trough are enlightening.
University of Washington Provost Phyllis Wise has taken on a second job as a director on the corporate board of Nike, the ubiquitous athletic apparel and equipment company.
As the UW's No. 2 administrator, Wise now earns $535,000 in salary and deferred compensation. She said she hasn't asked Nike about compensation, but last year the company paid its 10 directors $132,000 to $217,000 each in cash and stock, according to its annual report. .
It's not uncommon for top administrators at large universities to sit on corporate boards.
UW President Mark Emmert, who earns $905,000 annually in total compensation, sits on the boards of two local Fortune 500 companies, Expeditors International and Weyerhaeuser. In those roles, he earns an extra $340,000 annually in cash and stock.
There are plenty of competent people looking for work. If this woman or any man wants to leave because they can live on their university salary, show them the door. If the university regents are too gutless to tell them that and enforce a strict conflict of interest policy, then the Governor needs to show them the door and replace them with people who have integrity as their first priority.
The Chronicle of Higher Education is reporting that the University of Wisconsin at Madison has cut ties with Nike.

Anyone still think there is no potential conflict of interest in Provost Wise's directorship with Nike?
Let see, the decision might be made by either President Emmert, who is leaving or Provost Wise, who sits on the Nike board and gets big $$$$$$$$$$. Sweet.
What part of conflict of interest are these not getting? Admittedly, state universities get a large part of their funding from nonpublic sources, but they still have a PUBLIC PURPOSE. Because of that public purpose, the lame Washington AG should Goedkope Nike Air Max 2016 not be going after the FEDERAL HEALTH INSURANCE LEGISLATION, but should direct his attention closer to home. Dude, it might even help you get noticed as potential governor material. Before tilting at windmills on the federal level, how about making sure we have clean government in this state and that PUBLIC OFFICIALS UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF PUBLIC PURPOSE and CONFLICT OF INTEREST.
Emmert's days at the UW are numbered he has just a few months before he leaves to assume the helm of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
Before he goes, the Student Labor Action Project wants him to take a hard stance against the Oregon based apparel company. The group's call to action, backed by a larger national movement, includes a letter signed by a number of local labor advocates and city council member Nick Licata.
A university advisory committee for trademarks and licensing is recommending that the UW let its licensing agreement with Nike lapse when it expires in December. The agreement allows Nike to produce apparel and other goods featuring the UW logo.
The students want Emmert to make a decision before he leaves.
"To us, it would be bad form for President Emmert to leave the university and thereby negate such a decision," said UW senior Garrett Strain. "This has been in his court for quite some time now over a year.
